Term 1 Week 5

We are now into the fifth week of our new school year. We are working together happily as a class and really enjoying all of the new learning experiences. Here is an overview of the week:

Central Idea : We all mature throughout life and need to take care of ourselves as we change.

Line of Inquiry this week: The things that support our well being as we grow.

This is related to our science curriculum. The main focus has been inquiring into the respiratory system and its relationship to the circulatory system. We've learned a lot from the above video this week. Learners asked, "What happens if you smoke?" The answer was clear to them when they saw inside of some real lungs. We saw that the smoke would go deeply into the little air sacs and obstruct airflow. There was no need for the teachers to tell them not to smoke.

Written English work has been linked to science. We are continuing with the information text style of writing. Lots of research from books was necessary to support this work. The information books provided high-quality examples of how an information text is organised.  The writing serves as a form of assessment, and so these will be added to the portfolios with a checklist showing how well they are written.

Maths:

This week in Maths, we have been finishing our research posters ready to present next week to the different classes as we come to a close on our Y7 research project. In addition, we have been developing and applying our understanding with ascending and descending with decimals. We have then used this knowledge for reasoning and fluency through word problems. They found it tough to begin with, but once discussed and strategies were shown on how to approach this, everyone grasped the concept.

Next week, we will be doing our presentations to each of the classes about our research, ordering and position integers including decimals on a number line and looking at mean, mode, median and range.

Thai language:
Students have been learning about how to use prepositions this week. In the photograph they are playing a game to practice using them. Students have also been practicing for the Wai Kru ceremony which will be next Thursday.
